How to Choose the Right Security Company for Your Home or Business

Every security company claims to be the best. Even we do it! But let’s be honest – can we all really be the best? If I’m looking for a new product or service and someone tells me that they or their business is “the best in their field”, my question is usually “best for whom?”.

Think about food, for instance. Your favourite restaurant probably has dozens (if not hundreds) of five-star reviews on Google. But there’s always a few pesky one-star reviews. Now, it’s entirely possible that the chef or the waitress was having an off day at an unlucky time – but the more likely reason for the one-star review is: the restaurant just wasn’t right for the patron.

When choosing a Security Company (or any trade for that matter), it’s important that you take the time to make sure that this company is the right company for you. Here are four things to consider when choosing a Security Company:

Choose a Security Company You Can Trust

Trust is everything when it comes to security. You’re not just buying a product, you’re relying on a company to protect your family, home or business – so you need to know they’re reliable, honest and transparent.  Before you book a quote, consider how their website reads. Is trust important to them? When you book the quote, ask who will be coming to site. Knowing exactly who’s turning up helps you feel more comfortable, especially if you’re inviting someone into your home or around sensitive parts of your business. This is we put the names and faces of our team on our website so you know exactly who you’re inviting in before we arrive.

During the quoting phase, don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. A trustworthy company will welcome this and provide clear, consistent answers. Ask about:

  • “What happens if something breaks?” Will you be charged for a technician to come out? If so, how much?
  • “What’s included in the warranty?” Are parts, labour, or both covered?
  • “Who installs the system?” Are they in-house staff or subcontractors?
  • “What’s the process for future updates and upgrades?” Are they willing to do smaller jobs if you want some extras in the future?

A company doesn’t have to offer everything for free, but they should be upfront and honest about what is and isn’t included. You’re looking for consistency and clarity. If a company hesitates to answer your questions or avoids specifics, it’s a red flag.

Choose a Security Company That Offers Tailored Solutions

Security is never one-size-fits-all. A commercial warehouse has vastly different needs from a rural farmhouse or a suburban family home. And every family home will have slightly different needs. That’s why it’s important to choose a company that tailors a specific security solution that fits you and your property.

When getting quotes, look for companies that:

  • Visit your property in person to discuss, understand the layout and observe potential vulnerabilities.
  • Ask about your lifestyle or business operations, not just your budget.
  • Offer suggestions based on your needs, not just what’s easy to install.

Be cautious of companies that push set packages without asking many questions or adapting their solution—especially if they don’t visit your property in person. While packages might be convenient (hey, even we offer them), they should be a starting point – flexible enough to adjust to your property, not a rigid checklist. The right company will design a system that fits both your needs and your budget. Not just what’s most profitable or easiest for them to install.

Choose a Security Company That Offers Ongoing Support

A great security system is one thing, but ongoing support is critical to go along with it. Once the installation is complete and the invoice is paid, can you still rely on the company to help when something goes wrong? Or even if you’ve just forgotten how to do something on the app?

Here are some questions to ask:

  • “What’s your turnaround time for service calls?” If something breaks, how quickly can they get someone out?
  • “Do you offer phone support?” Will someone help you troubleshoot issues remotely or will they force a service call?
  • “Do you offer any ongoing maintenance plans?” What’s included in the ongoing payment?
  • “Will they still support you for small jobs in the future?” This is particularly important when considering using a large company vs. a small company.

Also make sure you ask if they’ll be willing to come back for small jobs in the future. This is particularly important when considering using a large company vs. a small company. If you’ve ever tried getting a large company back out to add a single camera, you’d know it can feel like booking Suncorp Stadium for a backyard BBQ.  Large companies have their benefits, but that comes more overheads and so they often struggle to make small follow-up jobs affordable. It’s not necessarily because they’re ripping you off, but because their large structure just makes those small jobs less viable. Smaller, local companies may be more flexible and better suited to handle adjustments and minor additions over time. Consider this if you think your security needs may evolve.

Choose a Security Company That Installs High Quality Equipment

There’s a big difference between high-end, reputable security equipment and the cheaper generic stuff you can find in budget installer packages. When choosing a company, pay attention to the gear they use. When looking into this, consider if the equipment is from a well-known brand with a dedicated website. Brands like HikVision, for example, have extensive product documentation and information on their website, so you know exactly what’s being installed on your property. If you can’t find a brand website or anything online that looks reputable, it may be re-badged or generic gear that’s hard to replace or support.

Also make sure you check if the footage is crisp and detailed – particularly at night. High-quality equipment performs better, lasts longer and has better features than generic equipment. Also check that the company is offering you the latest model of technology, and not the old model stuff they’ve still got on the shelf. Make sure the company is using technology that will serve you well long-term, not just the cheapest gear to close a quick sale.

Conclusion

Security is all about peace of mind. And peace of mind comes from knowing you’ve chosen a security company that listens to your needs, supports you long-term, installs reliable equipment, and—most importantly—is worthy of your trust.
