Should I Get Wired or Wireless Security Cameras?

Wireless vs Wired Cameras

This one is easy. You should get wired cameras.

There. You can click away now. But if you really want to know why, keep reading.

When choosing a security camera system, you may be tempted to consider wireless cameras. We recommend you don't and for good reason. While wireless cameras might seem convenient, they come with heavy trade-offs that can compromise security and reliability. At Covenant Security Solutions, we only offer wired camera systems. Here are eight reasons why:

1. Reliability You Can Count On

🔌 Wired cameras are connected directly to an NVR (Network Video Recorder) via ethernet cables. All power and data is transmitted directly through these cables, ensuring uninterrupted video recording with no risk of Wi-Fi dropouts or interference.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras depend on Wi-Fi or 4G, which creates risk of signal loss, lag and disruptions. You don’t want choppy recording when you need it most.

2. No Risk of Signal Interference

🔌 Wired cameras are immune to interference from walls, electronics or competing Wi-Fi networks. Your footage is always recorded perfectly in high-definition.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras can suffer from signal degradation, especially in large homes, businesses or industrial sites with metal structures and thick concrete walls. This limits the range within which you can place your cameras.

3. Higher Video Quality and Performance

🔌 Wired cameras support higher resolutions (4K) more easily with better frame rates and clarity. Plus, your NVR will be able to handle multiple high-quality streams without lag.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras will usually have lower resolution (like 2MP or 1080p), compressed footage and lower frame rates due to bandwidth limitations. Anything less than perfect network conditions will lead to laggy or pixelated recordings.

4. Always On – No Battery Hassles

🔌 Wired cameras are directly powered via an ethernet cable, meaning they don’t have a battery that will run out of power. Your security is active 24/7 without needing constant recharging or battery replacements.

❌🛜 Battery powered wireless cameras can die at the worst time – unless you consistently recharge or replace them. Yes, your app will likely let you know when the battery is running low, but you still have to go and do it!

5. Stronger Security – Harder to Hack

🔌 Wired cameras are physically connected, can be separated from your main network and even removed from your network entirely, making them much harder (or impossible) to tamper with or hack remotely.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras will usually sit on your main network and are more vulnerable to hacking, especially if your encryption and passwords aren’t set up well. Wi-Fi jammers can even disable your cameras completely.

6. No Internet Dependency

🔌 If your internet goes down, even though you won’t be able to view your wired cameras remotely, they will still be operating locally – all recording and any active deterrent features fully intact.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras rely completely on your internet, often using cloud storage. If your internet goes down, you can say goodbye to any recording.

7. No Cloud Storage Fees

🔌 Wired cameras store footage directly on the NVR’s HDD (Hard Disk Drive), so there are no ongoing cloud storage fees.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras often require cloud subscriptions to store and view video.

8. Designed for Long-Term Security

🔌 Wired cameras are built for permanent, professional security installations – whether for homes, businesses or industrial sites. Our HikVision cameras even come with a three-year product warranty.

❌🛜 Wireless cameras are often designed for DIY setups, are cheap, and you’ll likely get what you pay for.

Are Wireless Cameras Ever a Good Option?

In some cases, we’ll admit that yes, wireless cameras can be useful. But they come with serious limitations:

  • 4G Solar-Powered Camera Setups work well for remote properties without internet or power, but if you want reliability, be prepared for some hefty expense and regular maintenance.
  • Temporary setups (e.g. short-term rental properties) might benefit from wireless cameras, but they lack the reliability of a wired system, so make sure you’re aware of the risks.

But My Friend Has Wireless Cameras And They Think They’re Great!

If a pilot needs to crash land a plane and does so successfully with no casualties, the correct response is not “we should always land planes like that”. Sure, you might install wireless cameras and never have a problem, but that doesn’t mean there’s no risks in doing so. If you weight up the risks and still decide to go with wireless cameras, then great! Just don’t say you didn't know about the risks.

Wired Wins Every Time

Look, if you already have some wireless cameras and you desperately need someone honest and trustworthy to help, give us a call. We aren’t monsters, we’ll help you out.
